Allergy to nuts – what you need to be aware of
Food allergy is the immune system’s reaction to specific proteins in certain foods, which, although not dangerous, are perceived as such by the body.
Allergy to nuts is one of the most common food allergies.
Which nuts cause allergies?
Nuts can cause food allergies and allergic reactions to a lesser or greater extent, which is common. Nowadays, this phenomenon is quite common in children as well, as according to research, hospitalizations at a young age for nut allergies have increased rapidly. Some of these children may eventually outgrow their allergy as they get older.
The most common causes of allergic reactions to nuts are almonds, walnuts, and peanuts, which belong to the legume family but are classified as nuts. It is less common to be allergic to chestnuts, cashews, or other nuts.
If someone is allergic to one type of nut, this does not necessarily mean that they must avoid all nuts. However, it is possible for someone to be allergic to more than one type of nut.
Allergy to nuts symptoms
Symptoms of nut allergies usually appear immediately after consumption or, in some cases, even after contact.
The most common symptoms, which vary depending on each case, are coughing, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, respiratory problems, fainting spells, and even anaphylaxis, which is a very dangerous allergic reaction.
Keep in mind that someone with a nut allergy may experience different symptoms at different times.
