What are osmotic fruits and how do they differ from dried fruits?

Osmotic fruits are natural fruits that undergo a dehydration process, which avoids heat treatment and does not break down their original structure. This process is called osmosis, through which the natural fruit retains its valuable ingredients, aroma, and juices intact.

Natural osmosis, unlike the conventional method, extends the shelf life of products. A key advantage of this method is that it prevents microbial spoilage, resulting in a longer shelf life and making them more functional for the food industry.

Do they contain sugar?

There is a wide variety of osmotic fruits available on the market. They are sugar-free and preservative-free, and usually contain some fruit juice for a sweeter taste and natural sweetener, without the addition of sugar. The most common juice added as a sweetener is apple juice.

This makes them a healthy and nutritious snack, low in fat and rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and trace elements. They contain almost the same nutrients as fresh fruit and, more specifically, are good sources of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, calcium, selenium, potassium, copper, phosphorus, and folic acid.

Although they taste sweet, they have a low to moderate glycemic index and their effect on glucose and insulin levels is similar to that of fresh fruit. This is due to the fiber, polyphenols, and tannins they contain. Therefore, they can be consumed by people with diabetes, in the same moderation as fresh fruit.

Osmotic fruits

Most fruits can be processed using the osmosis method. Some examples of the most popular ones are strawberries, apricots, plums, mangoes, quinces, lemons, oranges, sea buckthorn, and pineapple.

How they are consumed

They can be eaten either with raw nuts, in yogurt, in salads, in cereals, or even on their own. It is also a good idea to add them to recipes, such as cakes or cookies.

It should be noted that although they are quite nutritious, it is best to consume them in moderation, as they contain quite a lot of sugar and calories. They do not completely replace fresh fruit, which should be an integral part of a balanced diet, but osmotic fruit has two major advantages. Firstly, they allow us to enjoy certain fruits throughout the year, and secondly, they are a healthy snack that is easy to transport and can be kept unchanged for a long time without the need for preservation.
